New York City FC managed to scrape by after breaking Querétaro’s hearts following a 0-0 draw. Luis Barraza’s heroics on penalties ensured the MLS side came out on top, and they held on to two points.
Elsewhere, two American sides went head-to-head, with Sporting KC pulling off the first comeback of the night with a 2-1 win over Chicago Fire.
The final showing saw Portland Timbers rally against Club León thanks to two goals from centre-back Zac McGraw. The unlikely hero scored in the 90th minute to ensure things finished 2-1 at Providence Park.
We see shades of Robin van Persie in this one as William Agada’s diving header saved Sporting KC in front of home fans.
The easy choice is McGraw. Back in the starting line up, two rising headers and his first two goals this season.
ZAC MCGRAW AGAIN! The defender climbs the ladder to give @TimbersFC the lead in the 90th minute! 😤–
It’s the best response after manager Phil Neville put the Timbers on blast for not scoring off of corner kicks.
NYCFC, Sporting KC and Portland Timbers all now sit top of their groups.
Looking at all the standings, MLS sides continue to dominate, with 14 clubs currently occupying the top spots compared to just one from Liga MX (Atlas).
We will be back midweek! Matchday 2 begins on Tuesday when San Luis faces Montréal. Four other matches occur that night before the action continues on Wednesday and Thursday.
