Meanwhile at the other end of the table, Luton fought back to earn a point against Nottingham Forest, seeing the Hatters ensure they remain within three points of Nuno Espírito Santo’s 17th place side.

Burnley picked up a rare win against a slumping Brentford, but the Clarets remain eight points from safety.

Rodrigo Muniz must be the player of the day after the Fulham man bagged a brace to extend his recent scoring record to seven goals in as many consecutive games.

The Brazilian became the first Fulham player to score in four straight home games in the Premier League and is quickly making a name for himself as one of the brightest young stars in the division.

There were points swings at both ends of the table after the matches on Saturday.

Aston Villa will be overjoyed to see Spurs drop the points that would have seen them snatch fourth place out from under them.

Meanwhile, Luton remain in touching distance of Nottingham Forest’s coveted 17th place, with the potential for Forest to receive a points deduction over Financial Fair Play issues in the coming week.

What they said

Burnley manager Vincent Kompany: “We did exactly what we had to do in terms of showing grit at times. There’s never been a lack of belief. For us, we have total belief, full belief.”

Luton boss Rob Edwards: “We’ve got to love this group, we’re in the fight, I really back this group to do something special.”

Nottingham Forest’s Nuno Espírito Santo: “I think we did enough to win the game.”

What comes next?

With more FA Cup action this weekend, the only remaining Premier League fixture is a battle of the claret and blues as West Ham host Aston Villa meet on Sunday afternoon after both teams found roaring success in European competitions during the week.
