Manchester City came from behind to beat Sevilla on penalties to lift the UEFA Super Cup in Athens.
Here’s what we made of it all.
Manchester City made it a fourth trophy of 2023 after Nemanja Gudelj’s penalty miss decided an otherwise perfect shootout. Youssef En-Nesryi had given Sevilla the lead in the first half with a thumping header before Cole Palmer dragged his team level just after the hour mark.
Both goalkeepers had fantastic but Lucas Ocampos was a nightmare for City’s defenders tonight.
He may have been on the losing end but his constant running caused Kyle Walker all sorts of problems, while his nous on the ball managed to get his team out of some tricky patches.
He would’ve had a great assist as well if En-Nesyri had been more composed with his effort while through on goal in the second half.
Rodri is making a habit of being City’s man for the big occasion, isn’t he?
It looked as if a compact and resilient Sevilla side had the European champions figured out but the Spanish midfielder produced the cross of the match on to the head of Palmer to level the match. The type of ball that was almost impossible to miss.
Pep Guardiola has another prodigious young talent on his hands.
For Guardiola, he has now levelled with Carlo Ancelotti for most wins in this competition (4).
Four is an important number as it’s City’s fourth piece of silverware in the space of four months, and they are on their way to pretty much completing football – if they can go and add the Club World Cup to their collection in December.
Jack Grealish on whether tonight’s celebrations will match the ones after the Champions League final:
“Nah, put a ban on that. We’ll go home tonight, eat some nice food, and chill. We’ve got another game in… what day is it? Three days.”
A tough week for City as they welcome Newcastle United to the Etihad on Saturday, a team they had trouble with last season, while Sevilla travel to Alavés on Monday searching for their first win of the campaign.
