Red cards proved a particular talking point on Saturday in the Premier League.

We look back on a dramatic day of action.

What happened?

The north London derby ended level as Tottenham twice came from behind to earn a draw at Arsenal thanks to Heung-min Son’s brace.

But Newcastle grabbed the headlines in the late kick-off as they thrashed Sheffield United 8-0 to make Premier League history (more on that later).

Chelsea’s horrific form continued as Malo Gusto was sent off in a 1-0 loss at home to Aston Villa, while Liverpool made it 17 league games unbeaten (the best current streak in the division) with a 3-1 victory over West Ham.

Brighton bounced back from their European disappointment by beating Bournemouth to go third thanks to Kaoru Mitoma’s brace.

Player of the Day

There are plenty of contenders for this.

Kieran Trippier became the first Newcastle player for three years to provide a hat-trick of assists, Yves Bissouma was a colossus in the derby, Mitoma mesmerised again and Boubacar Kamara bossed it at the Bridge.

But ultimately, scoring twice on the road in a derby and hitting a landmark goal count for your club in doing so (150) to claim a comeback point means that Son has to take the honours.

How different could the derby have been had Arsenal lost the influential Declan Rice to injury at the interval?

He didn’t emerge for the second half due to a back problem which will require further tests, although Mikel Arteta did admit that for the midfielder to request being substituted is evidence of how painful the issue must be.

And it was his replacement Jorginho who cost Arsenal the win with a brain freeze in possession which gifted Spurs their second just moments after the Gunners had regained the lead.

“I made a painful mistake,” the Italian admitted. “But the support I’ve received gives me even more motivation to work harder because the fans deserve me at my best.”

Stat of the Day

The statisticians were put to work in keeping up with Newcastle’s incredible 8-0 win at Bramall Lane.

The victory was their biggest ever on the road and equals their highest in the top flight, which also came against a Sheffield side when they thrashed Wednesday 8-0 in 1999. Something about the Steel City fires up the Magpies!

They are the first team ever to register eight different goalscorers in a Premier League game too.

And in their 4,988th game, it was also the heaviest defeat Sheffield United have ever suffered.

What this means

Liverpool and Brighton’s victories see them sit in second and third respectively, while the north London derby stalemate leaves Tottenham and Arsenal lurking just behind them.

Aston Villa’s victory sees them rise to sixth and Newcastle go eighth thanks to their easy win at Bramall Lane.

Chelsea remain 14th with just five points so far this season.

What they said

Eddie Howe: “We were good from the start and you could see the confidence come back. The important thing was we didn’t settle for the goals we had. I want that mentality in the team.

Ange Postecoglou: “The character, resilience and belief we showed is proof of the kind of team that we want to be. We went toe-to-toe with a top team.”

There may be no Premier League action until next weekend but for those who can’t wait for their English football fix, the EFL Cup returns in midweek with round three.

There are five all-top flight fixtures, the highlight undoubtedly being Manchester City’s trip to last year’s beaten finalists Newcastle, who will be riding the crest of a wave for that one.
