What happened?

Nottingham Forest gave themselves a three-point cushion in the race for Premier League safety with an exciting win over Fulham, while fellow strugglers Burnley could only manage a draw at home against Wolves. Everton snatched a late draw at St. James’s Park to remain four points clear of the drop zone.

In the upper reaches of the table, Tottenham earned a point away to West Ham in a back-and-forth affair in east London. Spurs could find themselves as much as five points behind fourth place Aston Villa on Wednesday.

In perhaps the least consequential match of the evening, Bournemouth scraped past Crystal Palace at home.

Player of the day

Callum Hudson-Odoi has found new life since joining Forest from Chelsea, showing just why he was so highly rated at Stamford Bridge amid turbulent times at the club.

Through 72 appearances for Chelsea, the winger managed just four goals. But in 50 less appearances for Forest, he has already eclipsed that tally by one.

Stat of the day

Dominic Calvert-Lewin finally got himself off the mark with a late penalty to salvage a point for Everton that also ended a 22-game barren run stretching back to late October.

What this means

The European places could truly begin to take shape after Tuesday’s results. Spurs could find themselves out of touch in a matter of days, while West Ham missed a chance to catch up with Manchester United in sixth place.

At the bottom of the table, we could be in for an all-time race for safety as 18th place luton are only five points behind 15th place Brentford.

What they said

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe: “Bar that penalty I think we go on to win that game 1-0.”

Everton manager Sean Dyche: “I don’t know how it took so long to give the penalty.”

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner: “Games are decided in the boxes, in both boxes we have to improve.”

What comes next?

There is another slate of games on Wednesday as Manchester City host Aston Villa in a top-four clash, while Brighton travel to Brentford and Arsenal host Luton Town.
