On Tuesday night, River Plate soundly defeated Independiente 3-1 to reach the Copa Libertadores semi-finals, where they will face defending champions Grêmio (BRA).

Thursday, Boca Juniors will have a fantastic chance to be in the other semi-final, as they bring a 2-0 first-leg lead into Brazil against Cruzeiro.

The last time the two sides met in South America’s premier competition was back in 2015, when the pair were drawn together in the round-of-16.

However, the duel wouldn’t be settled on the pitch. With River up 1-0 after the first-leg, Boca fans pepper-sprayed the River players when they came onto the field after a scoreless first half in the second leg.

Boca Juniors were disqualified from the competition, and River would go on to win their third continental title, their first since 1996.

It was only two Sundays ago that River walked out of La Bombonera with a 2-0 win and extended their amazing unbeaten run in all competitions that goes back to February and now sits at 31 matches.

Boca, who last won the Libertadores in 2007, have not enjoyed as much success this season themselves. After their Superclásico loss, they were bounced out of the Copa Argentina at home against Gimnasia.

The two sides are even on 13 points in the Superliga through seven matches, but nothing else will matter if they meet in the Libertadores final.

Nothing.
