The experienced defender, who enjoyed a productive loan spell with the Owls during the 2018/19 campaign, has been without a club since departing Fulham in the summer upon their return to the Premier League.

Hector has embarked on trial periods at Luton Town and Reading during the first part of the campaign, however, both clubs opted not to sign him.

Assessing whether or not Hector would be a good signing for the Owls as their central defensive search continues, Carlton Palmer told Football League World: “We know that Sheffield Wednesday are in the hunt for a centre-back.

“Hector has played at Sheffield Wednesday before. He was Player of the Season in the 2018/19 campaign – a fans’ favourite.

“The concern for me would be that he’s not played since May. I know he’s available on a free and it might be good business on a short-term deal but in a contest for automatic promotion, the fixtures are going to come thick and fast and it’s going to be very, very tight.

Darren Moore is the current manager?

True False

“The worry would be for me bringing somebody in who’s not played any football since he left Fulham.

“But, Darren is experienced and his medical staff are experienced, and you back them to make a well-informed decision.”

The verdict

It is a difficult one to fully weigh up because Hector is a player that is still of high quality, however, his lack of recent game time has to be taken into consideration.

Coming into the crunch end of the campaign, the Owls need to ensure that competition levels are high and that no further injuries are picked up.

However, with Akin Famewo recently returning from injury, Dominic Iorfa putting in some excellent displays, and the likes of Liam Palmer and Reece James proving to be more than handy options within the back three, it is a risk that might be worth it.
