As quoted by Football.London, Chelsea manager Graham Potter is confident about finishing in the top four but has talked about not looking too far ahead.

After a goalless draw against Fulham, Chelsea find themselves ninth in the table, 10 points adrift of fourth-placed Newcastle United.

With no participation in the domestic cups for the remainder of this campaign, the gaps between games may allow Potter to gel his side post the flurry of new signings made in the January window.

Here’s what the manager said when asked about the possibility of finishing in the top four (h/t Football.London):

“I’m confident with the potential that we have, with the ability that is in the group. What we need to do now is gel the team. That’s the challenge. There’s a lot of football to play. But at the same time I don’t want to waste too much time worrying about what we’re going to do in four months’ time, I want to focus on the next day, next training session & next game.”

It is a standard quote from a manager who knows has a big job on his hands. With the club doing the heavy spending last month, Potter must deliver a team which can win games consistently.

Although scoring goals have been an issue that was not rectified by the signing of a striker in the window, Chelsea have not conceded in the last three league games. So, there is a base to work with going forward in the season.

The next step would be to be more free-flowing in the final third and create more chances. They do not have a striker who can convert the one or two big chances garnered per game.

It is tough to see how the Blues can finish in the top four. Yes. Is it out of reach? No. There are 17 games to be played. Other competitors including Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are in further shambles, especially the former.

Hence, despite the current position at the table, we need to focus on how to bridge that gap between us and Newcastle. Once that is mirrored down to less than five in the eight games, anything can happen.
