Marco van Basten kicked things off when he scored four times ā including superb bicycle kick ā as AC Milan routed IFK Gƶteborg in the 1992 group stage.
It took seven years before that feat was repeated, as Simone Inzaghi scored four times for Lazio against Marseille.
In 2003/04, Croatian forward Dado PrÅ”o bagged four goals in just 23 minutes in Monacoās stunning 8-3 victory over Deportivo de La CoruƱa.
The following season, Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy punished Sparta Prague with four goals, before AC Milanās Andriy Shevchenko did the same to FenerbahƧe in 2005.
But it took until 2010 before somebody scored four goals in a Champions League knockout match.
