The Belgian Pro League title will be heading to Brussels this season

Article image:The Belgian Pro League title will be heading to Brussels this season

After their dramatic 2-1 win over Club Brugge over the weekend, Anderlecht all but ensured that the Pro League trophy would be heading to Brussels this season. Their opponents remain in third place, but are remarkably as close to relegation in terms of points as they are to league leaders Union St Gilloise. The other club from Brussels currently has 65 points, with Anderlecht in second on 57.

Even with points being reduced during the play-offs, there is little chance that any side will usurp one of the sides from the Belgian capital. Furthermore, the rest of the top six are still fighting to ensure they remain there come the end of the regular season. Union, one of the most successful sides in Belgian history, have not won the Belgian top flight since 1935, which was their 11th title.

Anderlecht have a slightly more successful recent past, even if that does feel like some time ago now. Their 34th title win came in 2017. They will have to hope that Union slip up if they are to grab number 35.
