Nikola Storm has got himself a second job. The KV Mechelen winger won a seat on the municipal council of Maldegem last Sunday, much to the surprise of himself and his teammates. The winger, as reported in an interview with Het Nieuwsblad, was surprised that he got enough votes to come in fifth place and earn a seat on the council. Storm hoped to get around 100-150 votes but ended up with over 300. He joined a number of current and former athletes who won election in Sunday’s round of voting across the country.

Storm is certainly not the first footballer to get into politics, however it is rare that one does so while still playing. The 30-year-old said club captain Rob Schoofs congratulated him with a text saying ‘Storm for President!’. While unusual, a footballer becoming a President is not unheard of. Clearly one of the most famous examples is in Liberia, where George Weah won two elections. The former Ballon d’Or winner was a senator and then served as the countries 25th President from 2018 to 2024.
