Despite being in different divisions this season, the rivalry between West Midlands outfits West Bromwich Albion, Birmingham City, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Aston Villa remains as strong as ever.

The Blues and Baggies currently compete in the second tier, with the latter hoping they can join Wolves and Aston Villa in the Premier League under Carlos Corberan next term.

Albion have been transformed back into promotion contenders since the Spaniard was appointed into The Hawthorns hotseat back in October 2022, and find themselves battling for a place inside the top six come May.

Birmingham also had the potential to be play-off contenders under John Eustace during the first half of the campaign, but a managerial change to Wayne Rooney tilted their chances and saw the club slip down the division.

Rooney would go on to manage just 15 Championship games at St Andrew’s, with nine defeats in that time.

Tony Mowbray is the latest manager to take the hotseat at Blues, looking to pick up the pieces and salvage some positivity of what is left of the season.

Birmingham and West Brom have met twice during this second tier season, with both sides securing bragging rights in each fixture.

Back in October last year, Blues would claim their fourth successive West Midlands derby victory over the Baggies, as John Swift’s opener was cancelled out by a controversial Juninho Bacuna penalty, while Dion Sanderson’s header and a free kick from Gary Gardner sealed the points.

The latest instalment at The Hawthorns saw West Brom come out on top, as Andi Weimann’s 85th minute winner secured three points and strengthened their grip in the top six race.

West Brom would also entertain a first Black Country derby with supporters in 12 years, but fell to a 2-0 defeat against Wolves, with strikes from Pedro Neto and Matheus Cunha knocking Corberan’s men out of the FA Cup.

West Brom, Wolves and Aston Villa were all founding members of the Football League back in 1888, with these clubs steeped in tradition and holding multiple pieces of silverware.

Here at Football League World, we compare how many trophies each West Midlands side holds.

Starting with West Brom, the Black Country outfit have won 12 trophies since their founding in 1878, ranking them third in the list.

The Baggies have lifted the Championship title on three occasions, in 1902 and 1911, while the latest triumph came in 2008 under Tony Mowbray.

Albion possess an illustrious history in the FA Cup, lifting the trophy five times, with their most recent success coming in 1968.

West Brom also won the League Cup back in the 1965/66 campaign and tasted success in the top flight also, lifting the title in the 1919/20 term.

Winning the top division allowed the club to lift the Community Shield the season after, while also reclaiming the trophy in 1955.

Birmingham City have the lowest trophy count with nine

Second tier rivals Birmingham have the lowest trophy count out of the West Midlands sides, with nine in their collection.

Blues have had multiple successful seasons in the EFL, winning the Third Division title in 1995 while being crowned champions of the Second Division four times, in 1893, 1921, 1948 and 1955.

Birmingham achieved EFL Trophy success twice within four years in 1991 and 1995, while they lifted the League Cup in 1963 and most recently 2011, as an Obafemi Martins strike sealed a 2-1 victory over Arsenal in the final under Alex McLeish.

Wolves sit second having won 21 trophies in their history

Premier League side Wolves come second in the list, winning 21 pieces of silverware in their history.

Wanderers have managed to lift titles at every tier of the EFL, securing the Fourth Division crown in 1988 while being victorious in the Third Division a year later and all the way back in 1914.

The Molineux has witnessed Wolves have glory in the second tier too, lifting the trophy four times, including in the 2017/18 term under Nuno Espírito Santo.

The 1950s was where Wolves dominated in the top flight, winning the First Division title on three occasions in that decade, while the club also won four Community Shield finals between 1950 and 1961.

Wolves have also been successful in the League Cup in 1974 and 1980, as well as lifting the EFL Trophy once in 1988.

Aston Villa top the West Midlands trophy count with 24

The Villans have been dominant in both the FA and League Cup, lifting those pieces of silverware a combined 12 times.

Villa have won the Second Division twice in 1938 and 1960, while becoming First Division champions seven times, winning it on five occasions between 1894 and 1900.

Their most recent top-flight success came in 1981, while Villa famously went all the way to lift the European Cup in 1982.

In the same season, Villa would win the Community Shield and won the UEFA Super Cup final the following term, beating Barcelona over two legs.
