It has been a brilliant summer of football and we have almost reached the climax of Euro 2022.
Here – in no particular order – are the five players we have enjoyed watching the most at the tournament.
Sarina Wiegman’s “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” approach to team selection means Russo is yet to start a game for England at the Euros, yet the 23-year-old has chipped in with four goals, putting her third on the list of the tournament’s top scorers.
Her most recent goal was that genius back-heel against Sweden in the semi-final, and it was her quick-thinking assist that helped the Lionesses get back on level terms in the quarter-final against Spain.
The Manchester United forward has scored a goal every 50 minutes at the tournament so far, and she has a bright future ahead of her.
It was unfortunately another nearly year for France as they made it to their first ever European Championship semi-final, only to lose out to Germany.
But Les Bleues can still look back on this summer fondly, particularly their electric 5-1 victory over Italy in their first group game.
Though it was a wonderful team performance, the star of the show that night was Grace Geyoro, who became the first woman in European Championship history to net a first half hat-trick.
But as well as her goals, the 25-year-old is the ultimate team player who was a crucial cog in Corinne Diacre’s machine and was never afraid to do the dirty work in midfield, with awareness, energy and commitment in abundance.
C’est magnifique.
Everybody who loves football loves a clever playmaker and Asllani has been so much fun to watch this summer.
Whether she’s gliding gracefully across the pitch, threading through balls or putting defenders on their backsides, Sweden’s captain plays the game like we’d all love to be able to.
But there is more than just technical quality to the 32-year-old’s game. She’s a fighter with a strong mentality too, who isn’t afraid to speak her mind.
Wonderful player.
Germany’s goalscoring hero missed the last two Euros through injury and would have missed this one if it had taken place in 2021, as was originally planned.
But the scheduling change gave Popp the chance she needed and she took it with aplomb when she headed home her first ever goal in the competition in Die Nationalelf’s opener against Denmark.
They say once you Popp you can’t stop, and since then it’s been nothing but net, with the 31-year-old on six goals heading into Sunday’s final.
Her brace against France showed what she’s all about, with the first a well timed run and emphatic finish, followed by a towering header for the second.
Four of her six goals have been scored with her noggin in fact, and England will have to be wary of her aerial threat at Wembley.
Competing with Popp for the Golden Boot will be the brilliant Mead.
Many might have expected Ellen White to be England’s main source of goals at the tournament but instead it has been Mead, who has chipped in with six so far from a wide position.
Three of those came in that jaw-dropping 8-0 victory over Norway in the group stage, but the most important to date was her well-taken volley against Sweden in the semi-final. The game hung in the balance until that moment, and England never looked back after it went in.
That’s what the 27-year-old is all about, a player for the big moments.
Now let’s see if she has one more up her sleeve in the final.
