The 1970 Podcast: Decision Time for PSG and Pochettino
With the fanbase at odds, Paris Saint-Germain put forth another disappointing effort and time is running out on Mauricio Pochettino.
If you were to just look at the standings, PSG is pretty much where you would expect them to be at this point in the season. They have a comfortable lead in Ligue 1 and they’ll finish just behind City in the Group A of the Champions League. The problem is the performance on the pitch.
Too often this season, PSG is outplayed despite possessing one of the most talented squads ever put together. Pochettino has yet to figure out how to unlock the team’s potential, but as we discuss on the podcast, he has a month to change tactics and settle on a preferred starting lineup before the second half of the season kicks off.
If Pochettino is unable to figure things out, there’s only one man that Marc and I can see replacing him and that is Zinedine Zidane. He has experience managing world-class players and his resume as a manager is unquestioned. As things stand now, PSG claim there has been no contact with Zidane and Pochettino will remain as manager, but a few losses and poor performances and that could change very quickly.
We also discuss the situation with Marco Verratti who is currently injured and missed the match against City. There’s no questioning his talents, but his inability to be available for big games is a real problem for PSG and with a lack of midfield options, we wonder if PSG will sign a midfielder in January.
We wrap up the show by discussing Neymar Jr.’s dip in form, especially when it comes to finishing in front of goal, and selecting who we think PSG will draw in the knockout stage of the Champions League.
