Tijjani Reijnders has remained tight-lipped on the subject of his club future amid widespread reports confirming an agreement between Manchester City and AC Milan.
The Premier League and Serie A clubs are understood to have reached an agreement over the transfer of the central midfielder worth an initial €55 million, and rising to as high as €70 million depending on add-ons and bonuses.
The expectation is that Tijjani Reijnders will put pen to paper on a five-year agreement at the Etihad Stadium upon the completion of a medical, which could take place as soon as next week ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup.
Italian football’s midfielder of the season for the last campaign is likely to become Pep Guardiola’s first official arrival of the summer transfer window, and make his debut for the club in the United States as part of the revamped and expanded global competition.
But it seems as though either news of an agreement has not quite filtered through to the player at this stage, or he is remaining deliberately tight-lipped on the subject despite admitting to speaking with one future Manchester City teammate about a move to the club.
Addressing reporters from the Netherlands’ training camp on Wednesday morning, Tijjani Reijnders was interviewed by Voetbal International regarding a potential move to City and news of an agreement being released throughout all reliable quarters of the media.
“The clubs [AC Milan and Manchester City] are still in talks. For me, it’s a waiting game now,” the 26-year-old admitted.
“I myself have been involved very little. My father does that,” he added on the subject of negotiations being undertaken surrounding his club future throughout this summer.
“The Premier League is of course a great competition, that’s what you dream of as a little boy. I haven’t had any contact with [Pep] Guardiola yet, that’s not on the agenda yet.”
Reijnders went on to admit that he has spoken to Netherlands international teammate and Manchester City defender Nathan Ake about the prospect of an Etihad Stadium move, as he continued, “Here at Oranje I’ve already talked to him briefly about it.
“He would like it if I came that way. But it’s not that far yet.”
The addition of Tijjani Reijnders to Manchester City’s playing squad will also come as a timely boost following injury news that emerged from the camp earlier this month, as the club released a statement concerning Mateo Kovacic.
Having struggled with a heel bone problem towards the end of the campaign that also forced him to sit out of the FA Cup Final against Crystal Palace, a decision has now been taken to allow for the midfielder to undergo surgery to amend the issue.
The current expectation is that Kovacic will be sidelined for up to three months as he recovers from the surgery, and that is likely to see Tijjani Reijnders come into the squad in his place and integrate himself into his new surroundings starting as soon as later this month.
