Chelsea have had a slow start to the season in attack, and part of the reason for that is a disappointing start for Kai Havertz.

The attacker got better and better towards the end of last season, and looked like he was breaking through when he got the goal in the Champions League final.

But instead of picking up where he left off, this season has seen him drop back to where he was a year ago.

That was put to Thomas Tuchel in the pre-match press conference today ahead of the game against Malmo, and he was honest in his answer:

“That’s a fact,” the coach agreed. He pointed out that Havertz’ stats were down on last season too, and offered a few possible reasons for it.

You can see the manager’s full quotes as carried by Football.London here:

“That’s a fact. He does everything to reach his level again and we will do everything to help him. He had many games to start with, started strong. The story has not changed, but he lacks the statistics of goals and assists and he needs to fight his way back into the team.”

Just like last season, we’re going to have to hope that Havertz ramps up into this campaign.
