Former Arsenal midfielder Anders Limpar has talked about the prospect of Viktor Gyokeres joining the Gunners in the near future.

The London giants have had a disappointing Premier League campaign and they are currently fourth in the table with only 19 points.

The club are languishing nine points behind leaders Liverpool and they have no room for error if they want to stay in the title race.

The Gunners have largely depended on Kai Havertz up front. The German has fared well with seven goals, but there is no competition for places.

Gabriel Jesus has looked far from his best since his knee surgery and Arsenal could spend big on a marquee striker by next summer.

Speaking to Fotboll Direkt, Limpars said that he knows Gyokeres very well personally, having mentored him when he played for Brommapojkarna.

The former Arsenal favourite also spoke on the progress made by the ‘hardworking’ striker and said it ‘would be crazy’ to see him at the Gunners.

He said: “I know Gyökeres very well personally, I was a bit of a mentor for him when he played for Brommapojkarna, he and Ludwig Augustinsson. So, I’ve talked a lot about professional life with him. He’s a fantastically hardworking forward who scores a lot of goals.

“If we at Arsenal [were to] buy Gyökeres, then he will definitely call me. But then to see Gyökeres at Arsenal, that would be crazy. His work rate, he runs like a madman. When it doesn’t work out Viktor, he works his way into the game with uncomfortable runs.

“When other top forwards aren’t doing well, they don’t work so hard for the team, they save their energy, Viktor never saves his energy. When things are a bit slow, he works his way into a game with runs, that’s why it has gone so well.

“I think his next step is to play in the Premier League and he can really choose which team he wants to play in.”

Arsenal could be tempted to sign Gyokeres next summer

Gyokeres had an extraordinary debut season with Sporting CP last term. He scored 43 goals and provided 15 assists from just 50 appearances.

Despite his exploits, many clubs including Arsenal were reluctant to trigger the £84 million release clause in his contract during the summer.

The Swede has continued to impress this campaign with 23 goals and four assists from just 18 outings.

He recently hit the headlines with a wonderful hat-trick as Sporting CP dominated Manchester City.

Arsenal take on Sporting CP on the road in the Champions League this month and Gyokeres has the chance to prove his credentials once more.

The 26-year-old is good with the ball at his feet and can create chances aside from scoring goals. He has also impressed with his hold-up play.

The Gunners could be tempted to make an offer for him next summer, considering he has a gentleman’s agreement to leave Sporting CP for £63m.
