George Dobson has admitted to “playing some of the best football of his life” after he signed a contract extension with Charlton Athletic.

The midfielder has been one of Charlton’s best performers this season and has been consistent throughout the campaign.

That inevitably led to fears of him leaving the Valley in the summer, which was worsened by his contract coming to an end this season.

However, having triggered an extension in his current deal, it ends any uncertainty over where his future lies next season.

The midfielder has made 36 appearances in all competitions this season and hit the amount required in his deal terms to keep him in SE7 until the summer of 2024.

Whether Charlton could move to make Dobson’s stay a longer-term arrangement is likely to become a topic of debate once the club’s ownership situation is resolved.

Speaking to South London Press, Dobson said: “I’m playing the best football of my career and genuinely loving it. So that option (in his contract) was games based. It was triggered by myself, because I hit a certain amount of games. My contract runs into next season.

“That conversation (about signing for even longer) hasn’t really happened yet. If it was to happen then it is something I’d obviously be very open to do.”

It’s reassuring to hear that Dobson is open to extending his stay with the Addicks, but with the uncertainty over the ownership, it could impact what he does next massively.

Dean Holden has seemingly arrested the run of inconsistency that has hampered the team this season. He’s won four of his last five league games and could be set for a late push for the top six should they maintain their form.

With a ten point gap between them and the playoffs, it would mean a near faultless run of form between now and the end of the season to achieve it.

The Verdict

Dobson has been a mainstay in the team under two managers this season, with Holden appointing the 25-year-old as captain.

That shows the level of importance the midfielder has within the team and how he’s developed in recent years since his move from Sunderland.

Not only that, but his maturity is a showcase of that and should his contract situation go unresolved into the summer, there is likely to be a queue of clubs looking at Dobson come the end of the season.
