Carlos Tevez and Sebastian Villa were on target as Boca Juniors heaped more misery on Santos, handing them a 2-0 defeat on Tuesday night at the Bombonera stadium for the Libertadores.

Pexie have been on a downfall for quite some time, and this defeat comes as the fourth consecutive loss in all competitions.

It comes after Ariel Holan stepped down from his job as Santos boss following their defeat to Corinthians last time out.

For their latest outing, Santos started the game on the upper foot and were the first to test the opposition goalkeeper. However, they lacked that bit of luck to hit the back of the net.

Boca Juniors soon took charge and got several chances on their own to open up the scoring.

Tevez put the hosts ahead few minutes after the break, as he took advantage of a deflected corner kick to strike first, although Villa was judged to have touched the ball last when it was going out for the corner.

In the 69th minute, a counter broke out as Tevez found Villa at the edge of the area, who hit the target and secured the victory for the Argentine side.

Speaking after the game, Felipe Jonathan spoke about the disappointment of yet another loss for Santos. He said: “We come in order to win the game, unfortunately we didn’t make it. We did a beautiful first half, but in the second half, in our inattention on the dead ball, they did and destabilized our team.”

After going four consecutive games without a win, Santos will be looking for their first win in a while as they face Red Bull Bragantino in the Paulista on Saturday, before facing The Strongest in the Libertadores next Tuesday.
