It took just six minutes for the hosts to take the lead when Júnior Urso combined brilliantly with Facundo Torres before smashing to the net.

Torrential rain at Exploria Stadium left some surface water on the pitch, making conditions extremely difficult for both sets of players.

Orlando were initially reduced to 10 men just two minutes into the second half when Antônio Carlos was adjudged to have stamped on the foot of Nicolás Acevedo.

It seemed a harsh decision, and a VAR check convinced referee Chris Penso to change his mind and give a yellow card instead.

But Orlando’s luck ran out when they were punished for a sloppy turnover when Thiago Andrade slipped in Maxi Moralez who levelled the game with in the sixth minute of stoppage time.

The Lions seemed destined to maintain their disappointing home form until Akindele glanced home Iván Angulo’s corner to break the Pigeons’ hearts at the death.

A statement home win keeps Orlando fifth in the Eastern Conference, but moves them to within five points of New York Red Bulls.

NYCFC stay third despite the defeat.
