PSG 2-3 Nice
THE MATCH
Moffi gave Gianluigi Donnarumma an early warning, drawing a save from the Italian goalkeeper early-on (11’). That warning was not heeded, the Nigerian forward was afforded too much room as he swept home a deflected effort (21’) after some good work by Jean-Clair Todibo, who had done well to win the ball deep in PSG’s half.
Nice didn’t have the lion’s share of possession, but they were dangerous when they had it. Khéphren Thuram, who was returning from a minor injury, drew another save from Donnarumma, who had to turn a curling effort around the post (26’).
However, it would be PSG that got the next goal of the encounter thanks to captain on the night Kylian Mbappé. The France captain’s participation had been called into question after suffering a minor knee injury whilst on international duty. However, he was fit to start and quickly on the scoresheet thanks to a smart finish (28’) from an Achraf Hakimi pass.
Captain Mbappé at the double... but in vain
PSG began to push for a second and went close through Gonçalo Ramos and then Ousmane Dembélé. The latter should have done better one-on-one against former PSG goalkeeper Marcin Bulka.
But Nice were a constant threat at the other end, and Jordan Lotomba almost reestablished Francesco Farioli’s side’s advantage before the break (45+3’). The goal did come early in the second half, and it was once again Moffi at the heart of things, taking the ball to the byline and squaring for Gaëtan Laborde, who finished into the vacated net.
Sofiane Diop then ought to have given Nice a two-goal cushion, but his tame effort was easily saved by Donnarumma. However, this game was all about Moffi, and the former Lorient man got his second with a smart, driven finish from outside the box. Moffi was stealing the limelight, but Mbappé tried to reclaim it, socring a spectacular volley from a Randal Kolo Muani cross late on.
A PSG seige on Nice's goal ensued, but Enrique's side failed to create clear-cut opportunities as Nice deservedly held on for the win. Les Aiglons are provisionally second in Ligue 1 with nine points as Farioli extends his unbeaten run at the club.
THE PLAYER: Terem Moffi
The Nigerian centre-forward didn’t see much of the ball, as has often been the case this season, however, he was efficient in his contribution. Moffi, who has seven goal contributions in his last six games made three on the night, scoring the first and the third, whilst also setting up the second. Unplayable.
THE STAT: 8
PSG's eight points from the first five gameweeks is the club's worst total at this stage since the 2010/11 season (seven points). Les Parisiens have now lost 11 matches in 2023, the most since 2011 where they lost 13.
