Regardless of the result in their final game of the season on Sunday, Manchester United will end the campaign with their lowest-ever total of points in the Premier League.

It’s been a disastrous nine months for the club and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who signed a new contract less than 12 months ago, was sacked just three months into the season.

A brief transitional period was overseen by Michael Carrick before Ralf Rangnick took up the role of interim manager. The German will now be replaced by Erik ten Hag, who will oversee the biggest clearout of players in many years.

According to the Daily Mail, up to 10 players are set to leave the club in a huge summer exodus as Ten Hag eyes to freshen up the squad.

As per the report, Manchester United are planning a summer clearout after Ten Hag arrived in the United Kingdom by private jet earlier this week.

Despite making the trip to England earlier than expected, he will not meet with his new players until after Sunday’s Premier League curtain-closer at Selhurst Park.

Up to 10 players are set to leave the club, with Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata, Nemanja Matic and Lee Grant on expiring contracts.

Furthermore, there are doubts over the futures of Dean Henderson, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Eric Bailly and Phil Jones. Harry Maguire’s future could also be under threat if a centre-back is signed.

SN’s verdict… Manchester United have a bloated squad and the expectation is that Ten Hag will perform major surgery as he eyes to get United back to winning ways in the short, but also long-term.

In terms of incomings, it’s believed that Ten Hag wants to bring in a striker, a winger, two midfielders and possibly a centre-back. That would mean five senior incomings, more than in any summer under Solskjaer, his predecessor.

It remains to be seen whether Ten Hag’s wishes come true but one thing’s for sure – United need to grant him whatever he wants, they cannot afford to let another manager fail.
