After a frantic start – in which both sides had goals ruled out for offside – Lionel Messi had another clear opening but saw his close range header tipped onto the bar.

Kylian Mbappé then broke free of William Saliba before stinging the palms of Pau Lopez, with Lionel Messi also going through before firing just wide from long range.

But the game sparked into life after half time when Achraf Hakimi was dismissed (following VAR dismissal) for bringing down Cengiz Ünder as last man, although Dimitri Payet could not convert the subsequent free-kick.

Ünder and Konrad de la Fuente both went close as Marseille pushed for a winner but Les Parisiens escaped Stade Vélodrome with a crucial point, while the hosts leave frustrated.
