Erik ten Hag has said ‘every game is a final’ for Manchester United in the club’s pursuit of Champions League qualification.

Manchester United are sixth in the Premier League table ahead of this weekend’s clash with Fulham, but have moved back into contention for a top-four finish after four consecutive league wins.

The Red Devils have reduced the gap to fourth-placed Aston Villa to five points and will hope to continue that momentum when Marco Silva’s side visit Old Trafford.

Ten Hag admits his team can not afford any mistakes across the run-in, as his team look to salvage their season from a stuttering start and earn their place among Europe’s elite next season.

“We know the reasons behind why we are not in the position and still have to catch up,” Ten Hag said at his pre-match press conference.

“In this moment every game is a final because have to be in the Champions League. The players want this. We believe, but we have to achieve it. I have the feeling we can deal with it better, but it is an issue when the depth of the squad is what it is.

“Last season we were third in the league and had two finals. You see in the last few games what this team is capable of. In particular, the potential in this team is very good.

“By the end the points will be more expensive. Everyone will be fighting [for position] in the league table. We are used to it and have the experience with many players across the team who can deal with pressure situations. We love it, actually, and are looking forward.”

Rasmus Hojlund is the latest name to have joined the injury list at Old Trafford, with the in-form forward set to miss two to three weeks with a muscular complaint.

Asked whether injuries could derail his side’s top-four bid, Ten Hag added: “Of course that is an issue but other clubs have this and we have to deal with this. I feel we can deal with it better.”

Ten Hag added: “All the players will have the opportunity to show their qualities. We have the confidence that they can. This is why we constructed this squad. We see players that are progressing that didn’t have a chance in the first half of season or were injured. Now they have the opportunity to fit into the team, but they have to prove it.
