Liverpool looked like they were going to throw away three points against 10-men Newcastle United until 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha struck at the death.
The future of Alexander Isak loomed over this game which quickly turned ill-tempered, demonstrated by Ryan Gravenberch's rash tackle in the eight minute that saw him booked early on.
The home side were the better of the two teams but fell behind in the 35th minute when Gravenberch fired a low drive from distance that left Nick Pope rooted to the spot.
Just before the break, the Magpies were reduced to 10 men. Former Everton forward Anthony Gordon inexplicably decided to dive in late on Virgil van Dijk which saw him given a deserved straight red card by referee Simon Hooper.
Things went bad to worse for Eddie Howe's side just after the break. Before the Alexander Isak transfer saga, Newcastle were strongly linked with Hugo Ekitiké. The Frenchman made his mark for Liverpool instead as his low drive made it 2-0 just moments into the second half.
Despite going 2-0 down and having just 10 men, Newcastle were by far the better team and their fight to restore parity was richly deserved.
The lead was reduced in the 57th minute when Tino Livramento crossed in from the left for Bruno Guimarães to head in at the far post.
With time running out a long ball over the top found substitute Will Osula who managed to keep his cool and put the ball past Alisson Becker to make it 2-2 in the 88th minute.
There was still time for a late dramatic twist as the Premier League champions counter attacked late in stoppage time. Mohamed Salah, who was far off his brilliant best in the evening, played in a low ball that Dominik Szoboszlai dummied into the path of Rio Ngumoha.
The 16-year-old had been on the pitch for just a few minutes before he was curling the ball past Pope to secure a stunning win.
There was bedlam on the Liverpool bench but Arne Slot will be concered about his side's performance on the night with their defence looking particularly fragile. Newcastle meanwhile will wonder just how they didn't get something from this game.
