Former Manchester United player Teden Mengi has gone viral on social media for a hilarious mistake before the Red Devils played Luton Town. The 21-year-old was returning to Old Trafford for the first time since permanently leaving the club in the summer in search of more regular football.
Mengi had come up through the ranks at Carrington after joining the club as a seven-year-old and no doubt would have been hoping to get more of a chance to represent his boyhood club. Having made his senior debut in the Europa League against LASK back in August 2020, however, only one other appearance for the first team would come his way.
The defender opted to leave United for Premier League new boys Luton in August, describing how the move was, "an amazing opportunity." He made his Premier League debut in a 2-1 win against Everton and has gone on to make six more outings in the English top flight.
Mengi's most recent appearance came against his former club, with the defender hoping to show United exactly what he was capable of. However, it was not meant to be for the Hatters, with Rob Edwards' side succumbing to a 1-0 defeat.
Despite frustrating the hosts and even having their own chances to score, Erik ten Hag's boys eventually found the breakthrough in the second half. A cleared corner was recycled by Mason Mount, who had a superb game on Saturday. He passed to Marcus Rashford, who's low cross deflected into the path of Victor Lindelof. The Swedish defender then blasted the ball into the roof of the net, securing all three points for the hosts.
Despite the defeat, Luton gaffer Edwards was pleased with his side's performance. While he admitted United dominated for large portions of the game, he believed his team showed great character in the second half.
"I'm disappointed we have not got anything from the game. I thought it was pleasing to get in at half-time 0-0. "They [United] had clearly dominated possession, we had a couple of hairy moments, we had one really good moment ourselves with Carlton's header and a few set-pieces as well. It was just key to be in the game. "In the second half, I just was delighted with how the players played. We were brave with the ball. We have almost taken half the ball here at Old Trafford, which for us, it shows we are really growing and improving as a football club."
However, one of the funnier talking points from the match emerged after the final whistle. Before the game had even kicked off, former United prospect Mengi was videoed arriving back at his old stomping ground.
Clearly, though, the move to Luton is still taking some adjusting to. Because instead of heading into the visitor's changing rooms to get ready for the game, Mengi headed into the home side's changing rooms instead.
A second or two later, after someone asked him, "where are you going?", the former United prospect realised his mistake. Swiftly exiting the room and apologising, he made those around him laugh about the error.
An easy mistake to make, given that he spent 14 years at the club, but one that has gone viral nonetheless. The clip on X has been viewed over 500,000 times and has been shared 1,200 times too. Check it out for yourselves below.
With the Premier League pausing for the international break, Luton players not involved with their countries will have two weeks to recover and prepare for the league's return. And the Hatters have two big matches coming up as they bid to avoid relegation.
Sitting 18th in the table, Kenilworth Road hosts Crystal Palace on Saturday 25th November, before Edwards' boys travel to the capital to face Brentford. Wins in those games will be crucial to their survival, especially as they then face Arsenal and Manchester City after that.
