Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Teddy Sheringham has urged the club to challenge for the Europa League title this season.

Spurs qualified for the Europa League after finishing fifth in the Premier League last season, missing out on Champions League football by two points.

Tottenham are gearing up for the new European format that has banished the traditional group stage format. A new league phase format will debut this season, with Spurs set to face eight different teams.

They will take on AS Roma (H), Rangers (A), AZ Alkmaar (H), Ferencvaros (A), Qarabag FK (H), Galatasaray (A), IF Elfsborg (H) and Hoffenheim (A).

“Tottenham should be looking to win the Europa League this season, without doubt,” Sheringham said.

“I think it was a very good achievement for Ange (Postecoglou) to get the club into fifth position last year.

“They had a chance at the Champions League, but I think that would have come too early for this group of players – I’m not sure we would have been ready for those demands.

“The Europa League is becoming an important trophy to go for these days.

“It’s so competitive in the Premier League to get into that top four, and the competition provides another route into the Champions League.

“Years ago, at Manchester United, it would have been a disaster if we qualified for the Europa League.

“It would have been devastating, but it’s different now. It’s regarded as a big European trophy, and I think Tottenham are in a position to challenge for that.”

Tottenham kicked off their 2024/25 campaign with a disappointing 1-1 draw against newly promoted side Leicester City.

They got up and running with a commanding 4-0 victory over Everton and will be looking to build on that triumph when they travel to face Newcastle United on Sunday.
