Manchester City head coach Gareth Taylor declared himself ‘supremely proud’ of his side’s efforts against Chelsea despite going down 3-2 after extra-time in the Vitality Women’s FA Cup final at Wembley.

The Cityzens were always in the game and were on top for large periods but they couldn’t quite manage to establish a lead against Chelsea, twice coming from behind before eventually being downed in extra-time.

When speaking in the post-match press conference, Manchester City boss Taylor said that he couldn’t fault his side’s efforts and he was supremely proud of their performance.

“I felt that we were dominant for large periods of the game – we started the game well, we had good chances and showed good character in bouncing back from a poor goal which we gave away,” Taylor said. “In the second half, we were controlling large parts of the game and in the last 20 minutes, I thought we were excellent.

“I thought that we were the only team in extra-time that would do it but we make a slight error on the half-way line which ends up costing us and it is difficult then because Chelsea can see the finish line.

“I am supremely proud of the team, I thought we were excellent today and shown great character. It was unfortunate that we just couldn’t quite get our noses in-front when we had the ascendancy.”

Commenting further on his side’s performance, Taylor said that he couldn’t criticise his players in any way for the defeat. The Manchester City boss reflected positively on the 120 minutes.

He added “My feeling at the moment is not really disappointed. Of course, we wanted to lift the trophy, we’ve done that before and wanted to do it again but at the moment, I can only feel pride in the way that the team played today. There are some things that we need to improve on and there were some mistakes but the only bit of disappointment that I would say is that if you give Chelsea three goals, you’ll have to do a lot to win the game.

“Outside of the three goals, I never felt that they had many opportunities, many chances. We nullified the threat really well and created numerous chances for ourselves where we just needed to be a bit tidier in the final part. This is football, it can happen, you can dominate for large periods and come out with nothing to show for it.”

Manchester City end the 2021/2022 campaign having won the FA Women’s Continental League Cup and having secured European football again next season.
