Taylor: Entire squad can make an impact

Gareth Taylor says the whole squad need to be ready to make an impact ahead of a busy fixture schedule.

City and Everton kick-off the latest round of Barclays Women’s Super League fixtures when we lock horns at the Joie Stadium on Saturday 2 March at 12:00 (UK).

Our attentions then turn to the Continental Cup semi-finals when we face Chelsea on Thursday evening, before a third trip to Brisbane Road this season to face Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

It means City are playing in three different competitions in the space of eight days, but Taylor is confident that his squad are capable of navigating that intense period.

He said: “[It’s] a game at a time. We prepare for tomorrow then have a bit of rest until the game Thursday.

“The turnaround is tight, particularly when you have to travel.

“[But] The players are at a level where they are used to this intense period and we’ve spoken about how we’ve enjoyed these moments rather than one game weeks.

“Two game weeks is exciting. The players who are not starting need to be ready and they have been. The contributions have been really good.

“If you look at Jess Park as an example she had to wait but then made an impact when she came on.

“Now she gets an opportunity in the team and needs to continue to perform. There’s a good feeling among the team at the moment.

“Confidence is high and for us it’s about concentrating on tomorrow's game then after that it’s about recovering onto the next.”

City come into the tie on the back of a phenomenal run of form, which saw us win each of our four matches across February without conceding a goal.

That level of success saw Taylor recognised with the Barclays Women’s Super League Manager of the Month award.

And Taylor is confident his team can continue to reach those levels in the coming weeks.

“Yeah, it’s really pleasing when you look at those games. To go and do what we did was impressive”, he reflected on City’s February performances.

“Full of praise for the team for their contributions. The Chelsea game feels like a long time ago now. We’ve now had the international break to recharge batteries, others have gone into a tough international period.

“It’s a quick turnaround with game tomorrow [but the] group looks good. The levels are really good, so that is promising.

“When you look back at those games we can still improve in a lot of areas. That’s a good thing and it’s healthy that players want to get better.

“Of course, when you look at the run we've been on, 11 wins five clean sheets, it's been an impressive effort by the team.”
