Designated Player Taxiarchis Fountas may finally make his debut for D.C. United this weekend against Austin FC.
The player has received his visa, making him eligible to feature for the Eastern Conference club. He is expected to join training on Wednesday.
Fountas originally signed a pre-contract to join United as a free agent in the summer when his deal with Rapid Vienna expired, but the two clubs later agreed the forward could make his way to the American league immediately.
The Washington Post first reported that the transfer fee was around $400,000.
Before making a move stateside, the forward recorded 64 goals and 37 assists in 255 professional appearances across AEK Athens, Red Bull Salzburg and Rapid Vienne. He also holds eight caps for Greece's national team.
Now, months after his arrival, Fountas is looking to make his way into the team. The reinforcement could not come at a better time for D.C. United, who have made an indifferent start to the 2022 MLS campaign.
The Eastern Conference side currently sits in 10th place on the table with only six points in five games and a record of 2-0-3.
