As reported by 90min, Leeds United held a strong interest in Castellanos, but the Premier League side have since moved on to PSG forward Arnaud Kalimuendo.

Even so, 90min understands Castellanos is expected to leave NYCFC for fellow City Football Group side Girona, who won promotion back to La Liga last season.

Though the details of the move are still being finalized, sources say CFG will buy out Castellanos' MLS contract before loaning him to Girona through the 2022/23 La Liga campaign.

Castellanos will leave NYCFC after scoring 58 goals in 132 appearances across all competitions. The 23-year-old currently sits top of the MLS Golden Boot standings after winning the award last year to help the Cityzens to MLS Cup glory.

In his final game for the club, Castellanos scored the winning goal as NYCFC beat rivals the New York Red Bulls 1-0 on Sunday.
