Sporting director Igli Tare has confirmed his departure from Lazio, 15 years after being appointed to the role.

The former striker spent the final three years of his playing career with the club before moving into a management role in July 2008, becoming the sporting director. He worked closely alongside president Claudio Lotito.

Tare experienced a number of highs and lows during his time as the Lazio sporting director, with impressive deals like the arrivals of Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Luis Alberto contrasting against poor signings like Vedat Muriqi for €20 million or Denis Vavro for €10 million.

Speaking via Calciomercato.com, Tare released a statement today confirming his departure from Lazio, closing a long chapter at the club.

After 18 years my wonderful experience as sporting director of S.S. Lazio will come to an end. It has been a long time since I matured this choice, but I waited for the good of Lazio to reach the goal of the Champions League, aware of having built a strong team, with extraordinary players prepared to achieve this goal. It has been a long and intense adventure made of joys, defeats and trophies. I will never stop thanking President Lotito for the opportunity he gave me, the Biancocelesti fans who have entered my heart, the club with all its members, the players, the staff and all those who have been close to me along the way. Special thanks above all to my family, who have always stood by me. It was a prestigious opportunity I had both as a player and as a director and one that I will never forget, taking every single moment of this journey with me. With the hope that each of you will continue, with the same passion that I had, to jealously guard this beautiful reality.

In recent years, Tare’s stock at Lazio began to drop after a number of disappointing signings and things were exacerbated by his poor relationship with coach Maurizio Sarri, which forced the club to decide which path to continue down.
