While Aston Villa’s 2-1 loss away to Bournemouth may not live long in the memory for most, it was certainly one for the annals of Tanzanian football!

Striker Mbwana Samatta, who signed for Villa from Genk last month, made his debut for the club and made his mark in the record books in the process.

His mere presence on the field made him the first Tanzanian to feature in the Premier League.

And when Samatta notched what transpired to be a consolation goal in the 70th minute, he set three other records.

The 27-year-old became the first Tanzanian to score in the league, and also the first player from the African nation to net on his debut.

The nature of the goal was also rare from the Villains’ point of view, as it was their first headed goal of the season.

Samatta’s debut was clearly a major event for the Tanzanian footballing community, and a video has been circulating on social media of a massive crowd gathered in his homeland to watch the occasion.

They will no doubt be staying glued to the screen for the rest of the season to see if their countryman can help the struggling Midlands club avoid relegation.
