The youth team coach of Talleres believes that new Inter Milan signing Tomas Palacios can become “one of the best defenders in the world.”
Taleres youth coach Maxi Salas hailed Palacios’s potential in an interview with Italian outlet FCInterNews.
This summer, Inter decided to make Palacios their big reinforcement in defense.
The Nerazzurri had considered a number of possible targets for the backline.
The profile that Inter were seeking was specifically a player capable of backing up Alessandro Bastoni on the left of the back three.
Moreover, Inter owners Oaktree Capital made clear that they wanted to invest in a younger player.
The Nerazzurri owners did not just want a low-cost stopgap solution at the back. They were aiming to sign a player with plenty of room to grow, as well as potential resale value.
And in that sense, it is not surprising that Inter decided to go with Palacios.
The Argentina Under-20 international is still just 21 years of age.
Palacios is certainly not a household name at this stage. But Inter were still willing to invest a decent fee in bringing the young defender in.
Naturally, Inter did not invest in Palacios based on the performances he has already shown in the senior game.
Rather, the Nerazzurri have considered what they believe to be a high potential level that the Argentine can reach.
And for his part, Palacios’s former coach at youth team level believes that Inter have made the right decision.
Talleres youth team coach Salas explained that Palacios “arrived at Talleres in 2019 from Pampa.”
“He had been noticed by our scouts,” he went on.
“He was playing for a club called Costa Brava. We chose to sign him after a trial, and he immediately moved to our training centre.”
Salas continued that “Tomas made his debut for Talleres. He played eight matches in our shirt.”
“However, at Talleres there was a lot of competition for a starting spot.”
“So because of that internal competition for a place, we felt that he could play with more consistency at Indepndiente Rivadivia.”
“Now, we can say that we made the best decision for everyone,” Salas said.
As far as the transfer interest in Palacios this summer, Salas said that “A lot of clubs in Europe were keen on him.”
“There aren’t a lot of defenders with his characteristics. His height, touch, technique on the ball.”
“Tomas has great physical fitness,” the youth team coach said. “And also great technical ability.”
“He can become one of the best players in the world in his position,” Salas predicted.
