Talks held: Arsenal prioritise top striker target – and it’s not Viktor Gyokeres

Arsenal have reportedly held talks over the potential transfer of Viktor Gyokeres, though their top target remains RB Leipzig front-man Benjamin Sesko.

Gyokeres has been in sensational form for Sporting Lisbon, scoring a remarkable 70 goals in just 75 games since joining them last season, and it seems only a matter of time before the prolific Sweden international moves on to bigger things.

One imagines Gyokeres would be a tempting signing for Arsenal right now given their issues up front, but a report from Football Transfers claims that Sesko is still seen as the north London giants’ top target in that position.

The Gunners still look like they’re in this season’s title race, but it would be unwise of Mikel Arteta to ignore his side’s attacking problems, even if Gabriel Jesus has surprisingly just hit some superb form.

Someone like Gyokeres or Sesko would surely be an upgrade on Jesus, who has been off the boil for some time, even if he’s perhaps starting to show what he can do again with five goals in his last two games.

Viktor Gyokeres or Benjamin Sesko to Arsenal?

Football Transfers reports that if Arsenal can’t land top target Sesko, then Gyokeres is someone they’d also consider, with talks supposedly taking place over this potential deal.

Although Gyokeres’ scoring record is currently superior to that of Sesko, it’s not that obvious which signing would represent better business.

Sesko is younger and perhaps has a higher ceiling overall, while he’s also played in the Bundesliga, whereas Gyokeres is 26 and still hasn’t played in one of Europe’s big five leagues.

It’s hard to ignore Gyokeres’ scoring record, but being that prolific for clubs like Sporting and Coventry City is a very different challenge to leading the line for a big team in the Premier League.

The report also mentions Newcastle being interested in Gyokeres, so AFC might also wish to avoid a bidding war there.
