With just 18 months remaining on his current deal, Takehiro Tomiyasu (25) is set to sign a new Arsenal contract.

That’s according to The Athletic who report that Tomiyasu and Arsenal have been locked in negotiations over the past few months as the Premier League side look to extend the player’s contract beyond 2025 – there’s also an option to extend the deal by a further year.

Tomiyasu has been an important player for Mikel Arteta, playing 20 games across all competitions this season. The defender’s versatility is one one of several benefits for Arsenal, more so now with the recent injury to Oleksandr Zinchenko, who picked up a calf injury against Liverpool on Sunday evening.

Since his move from Bologna in 2021, Tomiyasu has played 73 games across all competitions for the Gunners.

He also played a role in Japan’s Asia Cup campaign but a quarter-final defeat against Iran on Saturday ended their chances of winning the tournament. But that will give hope to Arsenal in their pursuit for the Premier League as the player’s return to London couldn’t have come at a better time.
