Former Tottenham and Blackburn midfielder Tim Sherwood has offered his ‘valuable’ insight into how Jose Mourinho has manipulated his Spurs squad into being genuine title contenders.

The current Premier League table-toppers pulled off a superb display in the 2-0 win over Manchester City at the weekend, putting in a typical Mourinho performance to frustrate their usually free-flowing opponents.

While Spurs are now rightly getting the plaudits after an excellent run of form, one man has taken a slightly different angle as to how Jose has gotten the best out of his players, suggesting that it’s down to brainwashing rather than good performances – yes, Tactics Tim is back!

The one-time Premier League winner has dipped somewhat under the radar in the last few years, yet has once again stepped into the limelight with his usual pearls of wisdom regarding the modern game.

The former Tottenham head coach has been critical of the appointment of Mourinho in the past due to his less-than-expansive style of football, because, as we all know, football should only be played in Sherwood’s gung-ho and gritty approach that worked so well at Spurs and Aston Villa…

While he does acknowledge that what Mourinho is doing has made Spurs an outfit capable of winning the league, he also appears to criticise the solid style of play which he believes the players have only bought into with the expectation of winning trophies. How dare they.

“He’s found a way with the group of players he has,” Sherwood told talkSPORT.

“He’s bought very well, [Sergio] Reguilon has been a good signing at left back, but [Pierre-Emile] Hojbjerg for me has been the best signing. He fits into the style and just protects the two centre halves.

“Jose has brainwashed his players to believe they have to work to achieve something – they need to win trophies, this group of players.

“When you play as solid as they do, he’s almost brainwashed them into believing.

“And why wouldn’t you believe in him? He’s won 20 major trophies in his career and you’re winning football matches, so then you start believing that this guy is the real deal, he knows what he’s talking about, and why can’t we win the league?

“When we’ve got players like Son and Kane, who are world-class and could probably play in any team in the world, you’ve always got a chance.”
