It was first blow Liverpool in the Premier League title race as Dominik Szoboszlai’s outrageous long-range free kick secured a 1-0 win over Arsenal.
Victory for Arne Slot’s men sees them head back to the top of the Premier League with three wins from three, whilst Arsenal drop to third place after their first defeat of the campaign.
Arsenal lost William Saliba to injury within five minutes, but despite this, the Gunners were by far the more dominant side in the opening exchanges.
Noni Madueke had the game’s first real chance on the volley 23 minutes in for Mikel Arteta’s side, but Allison was on hand to save well.
Hotly tipped to be one of the matches of the Premier League season so far, the hype surrounding this match was not matched by the quality on display at Anfield.
The Gunners were the dominant side for the majority of the match, but Liverpool were the first to have the ball in the back of the net on the hour mark when Hugo Ekitike scrambled the ball in from close range, but Cody Gakpo was offside in the build up.
Eberechi Eze’s life as an Arsenal player began in the 70th minute and his immediate energy and driving forward with the ball will ignite the excitement within the north London faithful this campaign.
However in a match devoid of much quality, it was the Champions that struck first with eight minutes left on the clock. Dominik Szoboszlai, Arne Slot’s makeshift right back after injuries in that area, unleashed an outstanding free-kick from 32-yards out that not even the Gunners’ supreme shot stopper David Raya could get anywhere near.
It was a deserved goal from the hosts, who were much improved from their lax first half showing, and enough to secure them victory but it was another what if moment for Mikel Arteta’s men, who failed to capitalise on their dominance, as the Gunners’ winless spell at Anfield continues into its 13th year.
