The Scottish Women’s Premier League have announced big changes to the league that will take place from the 2025/26 season onwards. The top-flight SWPL1 will now be a 10-team league, as will the SWPL2.

Celtic FC Women will meet each club home and away for 18 matches, after which the split will occur, separating the league into a top six and a bottom four. The teams will take each other on home and away again, with the top six finishing the season having played 28 matches.

The bottom three in the SWPL will be immediately relegated to the second division.

But what does this mean for Celtic?

Currently, we play 32 games in the SWPL. The changes to the format will decrease this number to 28, which could increase the quality as fitness levels will be higher. With fewer games being played, the post-split games are more likely to be spread out as well which could bode well for the quality of football.

This change affects the lower-placed teams more than it does us. With no changes to Women’s Champions League qualification and how the title is decided, things will stay relatively the same for the Ghirls.

Celtic FC Women are of course the Scottish Champions, in case anyone has forgotten!
