SWPL: All the action from Scotland as Glasgow City top the table | OneFootball

Following an exciting preseason and the SWPL Cup group stage, the top flight action in Scotland has finally made its comeback.

Last season we saw Glasgow City lift the title for the 14th time in a row, while Celtic won their first entry into the UEFA Women’s Champions League. Lizzie Arnot also grabbed the Golden Boot with an impressive 16 goals.

Now, with three new teams promoted from the SWPL2 and relegation in place, this year’s competition in Scotland is set up to be the best yet.

European exit

Glasgow City are no strangers to success in the Champions League, making the last eight on two occasions in recent years.

This year however, alongside Celtic, they failed to make the group stages. Grant Scott’s side fell short to Servette, losing 3-2 on aggregate despite plenty of chances in both legs. In Spain, Levante eliminated the Hoops to face Rosenborg in the next round.

Both clubs got off to a winning start in their league openers last week. Motherwell were hit for six by the reigning champions, and it was newcomers Aberdeen who were at the hands of a 4-2 loss from Celtic.

Despite being young and new to the league, the Dons put on a great display against Fran Alonso’s side. An own goal by skipper Kelly Clark and an Eilidh Shore header meant they started their first top-flight season in Scotland with goals to build on.

Happy days for Hamilton

Lanarkshire outfit Hamilton Academical got their SWPL1 term off to a flying start with a 2-1 win over Hearts. Hannah Scott slammed home a 91st minute winner to take all three points back home.

With a new Head Coach in place and lack of confidence from last season, Hearts could find themselves in trouble if they fail to pick up points soon.

Despite being a part-time side, the Accies have plenty of talented and experienced players who can take wins from difficult games. If teams give them too much respect, they are bound to grab their chances. Hearts being the first victim of that.

Hibs hit Spartans with three

Picking up where they left off, Hibernian sealed three points with three goals against City rivals Spartans. Alexa Coyle, Collette Cavanagh, and Michaela McAlonie shared the goal glory at the Tony Macaroni Stadium on Sunday and set the tone for the season.

Spartans fought it out for fourth place with the Edinburgh side last year, both finishing on 29 points. Hibs just nicked it with goal difference.

This season will be Spartans’ first as a semi-professional team under Debbie McCulloch. The news was announced earlier in the year, along with the signing of SWPL veteran Donna Paterson.

With more time to train and recover than some other teams in the league, they could eventually snatch that much dreamed of fourth spot.

The fixture between Partick Thistle and Rangers couldn’t be played due to covid complications in Partick Thistle’s squad. It will be rescheduled for another date rather than an automatic 3-0 for Rangers.
