Switzerland coach: ‘We don’t worry too much about Italy’ | OneFootball

Switzerland coach Murat Yakin underlined his side’s ‘great confidence’ ahead of their Euro 2024 Round of 16 clash with Italy, suggesting the team ‘honestly can’t wait’ for the match.

The Rossocrociati impressed in their Group A campaign at the tournament, cruising past Hungary 3-1 in their opening match before being held to a tough 1-1 draw with Scotland in the follow-up match. In their final outing of the group, they held hosts Germany to an impressive 1-1 draw, almost edging out the win.

Things have been far more difficult for Italy, who managed to grind out a tense 2-1 victory over Albania in their first match at Euro 2024 before suffering a painful 1-0 loss to Spain. Things looked dire against Croatia until a last gasp curler from Mattia Zaccagni secured a vital point, allowing the team to progress.

Switzerland ready for Italy duel

Speaking to Swiss media outlet Srf, Yakin first discussed Switzerland’s mindset heading into their Round of 16 clash with Italy.

“We’re playing for it. We can’t say we’re favourites, because we’re facing Italy, but the draw against Germany has given us great confidence and we can’t hide.

“We followed Italy’s match carefully, analysing tactics and strategy, we will delve deeper in these days. We honestly can’t wait. They are unpredictable, but we are prepared. Even from a mental point of view, we have enough quality to survive a match like this.

“In reality we don’t want to worry too much about Italy, in fact I think the opposite is true because things are working well for us.”

He gave his thoughts on the Azzurri and how Switzerland are approaching the match.

“Italy has a great league that I really like, very strategic and tactical. The national team have great players, it’ll be a big challenge. We’re looking at ourselves, but of course we also have to focus on the opponent, depending on where the Italians’ strengths and weaknesses lie.

“They have different ways of playing, which makes them dangerous. But they’ll also be thinking about us. We’re in good form, we’re unpredictable and we’ll try to get something out of this game.”

Finally, Yakin discussed the strengths of his Switzerland side and the impact of the fans.

“The high intensity and willingness to run have made us strong recently. Our system, our strategy works and we have the element of surprise on our side, and of course our great fans. When even Manuel Akanji or Granit Xhaka highlight the support, that really means something.

“Even against Germany, where they were clearly in the minority, our fans were so loud and dominant. It was great how they supported us for 90 minutes.”
