Switzerland Coach Defends Yann Sommer: ‘He’s A Leader At Inter Milan, Right That He Stars Ahead Of Borussia Dortmund Keeper Kobel’ | OneFootball

Switzerland coach Murat Yakin feels that it’s still right for Inter Milan’s Yann Sommer to start over Borussia Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel in goal.

Speaking in a press conference, as reported by FCInterNews, the coach defended the continued place for 34-year-old Sommer over the up-and-coming Kobel in the Swiss starting eleven.

Sommer has largely continued to keep his place in goal for the Swiss national team.

The Nerazzurri keeper has held down the role for the better part of a decade. He had made his international debut in 2012, and really nailed down his spot at the Euros in 2016.

This coincided with Sommer becoming one of the most highly-regarded goalkeepers in the Bundesliga with Borussia Monchengladbach.

Sommer left Gladbach to join Bayern Munich in January. And then this summer, the 34-year-old made the switch to Inter.

And at the Nerazzurri, Sommer has continued to prove his worth.

There have been one or two errors from the Swiss, but also many outstanding saves. He has had his role to play in Inter having the strongest defense in Serie A over the first eight matches of the season.

Switzerland Coach Yakin Defends Starting Sommer Over Kobel

The fact that Borussia Dortmund keeper Kobel is 25 means that he certainly has time on his side compared to Sommer.

And the Dortmund man has been in impressive form for several seasons now.

Kobel is the regular starter for Dortmund, for whom he is a key player.

Therefore, there could be some questions about when the 25-year-old will start getting a look in to the team.

But for Yakin, it is not yet time for the sun to set on Sommer.

“He’s a leader at Inter,” the coach said of his goalkeeper. “He feels comfortable and confident again.”

“That’s why we won’t change. He’s played good matches, and it’s therefore right for him to keep starting.”
