Given Swindon Town’s frustrating season in the depths of League Two football, the upcoming summer transfer window will be vital if the Robins are to avoid a similar struggle next campaign.

Following Town’s encouraging 10th place finish in the fourth tier last term, there was avid optimism around the County Ground that Swindon could perhaps push for a play-off place this season.

However, with just one game remaining of the 2023/24 campaign, the Robins currently sit all the way down in 19th place, eight points worse off than they ended 2023/24.

Their inconsistent performances and lack of identity at times have proved a sizable frustration for their fans and make the upcoming transfer window more important than ever.

We’ve located one signing that the Robins could make this summer to aid their defensive frailties next term.

Swindon have struggled defensively

One area of the pitch where the Robins have struggled the most is in defence, with 80 league goals conceded in 45 matches – almost two per game.

A few low points for Town from a defensive point of view over their league campaign include conceding five against Wrexham, four against Wimbledon and four against Stockport.

Aside from their league struggles, the Robins also shipped seven goals in their 7-4 FA Cup first round defeat at home to non-league Aldershot Town.

Town's defensive frailties have no doubt played a big part in their underwhelming campaign, and they'll be keen to strengthen at the back in the coming months.

Liverpool defender Rhys Williams could be available

Liverpool talent Rhys Williams has shown his class both for the Reds in the past, as well as across several loan spells in recent seasons.

The Welsh defender made a name for himself back in 2021, when he and Nathaniel Phillips covered admirably for Liverpool’s heavy defensive injury troubles.

Since then, he’s spent positive loan spells at Swansea City and Blackpool to gain further first-team experience, however, his last two loans haven’t gone to plan.

Williams joined Aberdeen at the start of the campaign but injury problems prevented him from becoming a regular in Scotland before a brief loan at Port Vale was cut short due to the Reds recalling him.

With Jarrell Quansah seemingly taking Williams’ position as the preferred young centre-back in the team, as well as the Reds appointing a new manager in the coming months with Jurgen Klopp departing, Williams could be available for transfer this summer.

Despite his time at Aberdeen and Port Vale being unsuccessful, the young defender has made his on-the-ball talent and, more importantly in Swindon's case, his defensive solidarity clear to see.

In 15 Premier League and Champions League games for the Reds, he helped guide Klopp's side to eight clean sheets.

At just 23 years old, he will want to be playing regular matches which, barring another injury crisis, he won't get at Liverpool in the near future.

Williams has shown his willingness to spend time away for the Reds in the past and if he becomes available this summer, whether on loan or permanently, he could prove a helpful addition to the Robins.
