Swindon Town crowned champions as League Two season is curtailed

The EFL have confirmed that the League Two season has been formally ended after the majority of the clubs voted in favour of the decision.

It was revealed earlier last month that the League Two campaign was unlikely to continue after the coronavirus shutdown and an early finish to the season has been confirmed after a fresh meeting on Tuesday.

The unweighted points-per-game system has been used to decide the league places and Swindon Town have been promoted to League One as the champions.

Meanwhile, Crewe Alexandria and Plymouth Argyle will also play in the third tier next season after securing promotion with the second and third positions on the table.

Cheltenham Town, Exeter City, Colchester United and Northampton Town will contest the play-offs. The EFL have revealed that the first and second leg of the play-off semi-finals will be held on June 18 and June 22 with the final at the Wembley Stadium on June 29.

Meanwhile, Stevenage Town would have been relegated from the Football League in a normal situation. However, a decision on the same could be delayed with fresh disciplinary charges against Macclesfield Town.

Macclesfield were deducted four points in December 2019 for their failure to pay player’s wages and being unable to fulfil their fixture versus Crewe. They have since been docked another seven points for failing to play December’s match against Plymouth Argyle.

They are currently just three points ahead of Stevenage in the standings and are under investigation for a fresh breach of EFL regulations. A penalty of four points or more could see them relegated to the National League instead of Stevenage.
