Sweden Under-21 coach Jens Gustafsson has been announced to take charge of Ekstraklasa side Pogoń Szczecin from the start of the 2022/23 season. The 43-year-old has signed a three-year deal with the Portowcy, with the option to extend for a further 12 months.

In late March, Pogoń announced that their current coach Kosta Runjaić would leave the club in the summer, after almost five years in charge. The German is favourite to take the reins at Legia Warsaw, having led Pogoń to successive podium finishes in the Polish top flight.

Again, Pogoń have opted for a foreign coach, and announced on Monday that Gustafsson would make the short hop across the Baltic Sea having paid to release him from his contract. The Portowcy will become the former defender’s second club abroad, having spent six months in charge of Croatian side Hajduk Split towards the end of 2021.

Previously in his management career, Gustafsson has led both Halmstads BK and IFK Norrköping. He has led the Swedish under 21 side since January – his second spell with the youth team, having assisted the Euro 2015-winning side.

“I can’t wait to meet the team and start our daily co-operation, the result of which will be the team’s success. I know that the construction of the beautiful stadium in Szczecin is coming to an end and I want the facility to fill up to the last available space for our matches.”– Jens Gustafsson, pogonszczecin.pl

Pogoń currently sit third in the Ekstraklasa, 5 points behind leaders Lech Poznań and 3 behind Raków Częstochowa, with two games remaining.
