Sweden forward Lina Hurtig is returning to Arsenal ahead of schedule as a result of the player’s foot injury.

The Swedish Football Association, the SvFF, announced news of Hurtig’s withdrawal from the national team squad via an update on their official website this morning.

Hurtig has been struggling with her injury in recent days and the player missed Sweden’s 4-1 victory over China in Marbella on Thursday as a result. The 27-year-old has been rebuilding her fitness but she will not be fit in time for Sweden’s international friendly against Germany in Duisburg on Tuesday evening. With Hurtig unable to play any part, the decision has been made to release the player so that she can continue her rehabilitation with Arsenal.

It is hoped that Hurtig might be fit for Arsenal’s Vitality Women’s FA Cup fifth round tie against Chelsea at Kingsmeadow next Sunday but the player does face a race against time and she will have to prove her fitness to The Gunners medical staff ahead of that match.

Hurtig’s injury does provide a further headache for Arsenal head coach Jonas Eidevall. The North Londoners are short in the attacking areas as a result of long-term injuries sustained by Beth Mead and Vivianne Miedema. The Gunners cannot afford to lose another attacking player to injury and the club will be hoping that Hurtig’s problem does not become anything more than minor.
