Manager Russell Martin opted for a back three, 3-4-3 formation. Goalkeeper Ben Hamer was covered by Ben Cabango, Kyle Naughton and Ryan Bennett as the three centre backs, while Ryan Manning and Ethan Laird occupied the two wing-back positions. Matt Grimes and Flynn Downes occupied the central midfield positions. Forward Joel Mohammed led the line-up in the attack supported by Jamie Paterson on the left and Jules Olivier on the right.

The average position shows that Swansea players occupied a lot of spaces near the central zones. Ryan Manning pushed up high near the centre while Ryan Benett remained in his defensive area. Flynn Downes played closely with his defenders while Matt Grimes pushed up the field to link up with his forwards.

Millwall lined up in a similar back three, 3-4-3 formation. Cooper, Wallace and Ballard occupied the three centre back positions shielding the goalkeeper Bialkowski. Saville and Kieftenbeld were the two men in midfield. Malone and Mitchell occupied the two wing-back positions. Tom Bradshaw led the lineup flanked by Bennett and Wallace on either side.

Most of the Millwall players sat in their own half. The two wing-backs did not push too high up the field. Midfielders Saville and Kieftenbeld played closely.

Swansea came out on top in the xG battle, with a narrow advantage. They had an xG of 1.39 over Millwall’s 1.17. Swansea similarly edged out on the total shots, both teams had equal shots on target, four. The home side dominated the possession claiming the lion’s share with 64%.

Tom Bradshaw led the xG chart with an xG of 0.45. Joel Mohammed took the highest number of shots, four. Flynn Downes made a total of 12 passes into the final third. Jake Cooper won six aerial duels.

Swansea took a total of 12 shots, with most of their shots from outside the box.

Millwall engaged in defensive duels in their own half and near the centre. Saville won just one of his twelve defensive duels.

The visitors were good in the air near the opposition half while they also won many of their aerial duels on the left wing near the centre. Cooper won six of his eight aerial duels.

Millwall were most active in recovering loose balls in the right-wing. Mitchell won two of the seven loose balls duels that he engaged in.

Despite claiming the majority of possession, Swansea were unable to break the deadlock. Both teams improved as the second half progressed.
