Swansea City are set to add Colin Calderwood to their coaching staff ahead of the 2022/23 campaign, according to a report from BBC Sport.

The Jacks have been looking for a new coach following Luke Williams’ departure in February and thus Calderwood is expected to fill this void.

After serving as a co-assistant alongside Mike Garrity at Blackpool, Calderwood was appointed as Northampton Town’s assistant manager in June 2021.

The 57-year-old played a role in helping the Cobblers reach the play-offs in the fourth-tier where they suffered a defeat to Mansfield Town in the semi-finals.

Calderwood previously managed Northampton between 2003 and 2006 before being handed over the reins at Nottingham Forest.

During his time with the Reds, he led the club to promotion to the Championship in 2008.

The Scotsman has also had spells in charge of Hibernian and Cambridge United whilst he has worked as an assistant at Newcastle United, Birmingham City and Aston Villa.

Swansea will be looking to push on next season after finishing 15th in the Championship standings earlier this month.

Head coach Russell Martin will need to nail his transfer recruitment this summer in order to boost his side’s chances of achieving a relative amount of success in the second-tier later this year.

The Verdict

This could turn out to be a shrewd appointment by Swansea as they will be able to lean on Calderwood’s wealth of experience during the 2022/23 campaign.

One of the areas that Calderwood may be able to improve is the Jacks’ defensive record which was particularly poor last season.

Swansea’s progress in the Championship was hindered by the fact that they conceded 68 goals at this level.

When you consider that Northampton managed to keep 21 clean-sheets in League Two last season under the guidance of Calderwood and Jon Brady, it wouldn’t be at all surprising if the Jacks go on to produce some solid defensive performances next season.
