Swansea City are locked in talks with MLS outfit Seattle Sounders as they attempt to sign Jordan Morris on a six-month loan deal, per The Telegraph.

The Swans are in the market for an attacking player due to the departure of Brighton loanee Viktor Gyokeres and Morgan Gibbs-White has also returned to Wolverhampton Wanderers – although he is more of an attacking midfielder.

With Steve Cooper playing a 3-5-2 system, an out-and-out striker would probably be ideal considering neither Jamal Lowe or Andre Ayew – for all their good performances this season – aren’t that.

But it looks like the South Wales side are set to take a chance on another forward player who doesn’t necessarily class a striker as his first-choice position.

26-year-old Morris was the subject of interest this past summer from Preston North End, but a report claimed that the Lilywhites didn’t enter official talks after realising he would be out of their price range.

Swansea though look to have found a breakthrough in regards to a temporary deal, and if they can secure promotion to the Premier League they would have the finances required to potentially turn it into a permanent move.

Did Swansea City sign each of these 14 players for more or less than £1 million?

A left-winger who also played as a striker earlier in his career, Morris netted ten goals and added six assists to his resume in 23 games in the 2020 MLS season (transfermarkt), and is regarded as hot property by the league.

The Athletic believe that Morris could fetch between $5-7 million (£3.6-£5.1 million) when the time comes for him to move on from America, and whilst Swansea couldn’t take a gamble like that now, they could get first dibs on him in the summer if his impending loan is successful.

The Verdict

As far as loan deals go, this one looks like such a good one for Cooper and Swansea.

A lot is made of the MLS’ quality compared to other European leagues and whether or not players making the move can ‘step up’, but Morris’ goal record for the Sounders in the last three years – 23 goals in 53 games from the left wing – is something to appreciate.

If the deal is completed then Morris will more-than likely have to revert to a central striking position which he undertook earlier on in his career, but from seeing him play for Seattle and the USA – who he has 39 caps and 10 goals for – there’s every belief that he’s good enough to play in one of Europe’s top leagues in any forward role.
