Swansea City in transfer battle for 30-year-old

Swansea City are once again interested in signing French central defender Mathieu Peybernes, according to MARCA.

The Swans have been linked with a move for Peybernes before, with their interest being reported by MARCA last summer.

Peybernes, who was also reportedly wanted by Nottingham Forest, spent part of last season on loan at Real Zaragoza, after falling out of favour at Almeria.

Last season, the 30-year-old made 20 appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal and producing a number of solid performances.

Peybernes’ future remains uncertain heading into next season, though, with MARCA reporting that Huesca and Swansea are keen on his signature.

The Frenchman has a year left on his contract at Almeria, but it is said that he is keen to rescind his deal ahead of of a potential move away.

It has been a busy summer for Swansea so far, with the Swans currently preparing for the new season without a manager in place.

The Verdict

This is an interesting link and it’s intriguing to see that Swansea’s interest is still there after being originally linked last summer.

The Swans undoubtedly need to bolster their defensive ranks after Marc Guehi returned to his parent club Chelsea before joining Crystal Palace.

Peybernes is at the other end of the spectrum, though. He’s approaching 31 and possesses a lot more experience, but has never really seemed to play regularly elsewhere.

It would be interesting to see how it all pans out if he did make the move to South Wales this summer.
